Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Perhaps more than other large cities, Philadelphia has retained its overt ties to early colonial America. This is not hard to imagine, however, once students learn that Philadelphia was the birthplace of American democracy, as both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed here.
Independence Hall
Independence Hall was the site for the signing of both the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution and was home of the liberty bell. The Liberty Bell was first erected in Independence Hall in 1752. Cracked after its first ringing, the bell was removed and now serves as an enduring symbol of liberty.
Independence National Historical Park
Nicknamed “America’s most historic square mile,” this 55 acre park preserves many sites associated with the American Revolution. The park’s most predominant attraction is Independence Hall.
Valley Forge National Historical Park
The site for the Continental Army in the winter of 1777-1778, Valley Forge was designated as a historical park in 1976. The park contains a museum, memorials, and recreated encampments.
National Constitution Center
Opened in 2003, the National Constitution Center seeks to promote the history and significance of the Constitution through exhibits and presentations. The main presentation is “Freedom Rising,” explaining the history and ongoing legacy of the Constitution.
Franklin Institute Science Museum
Dating to 1824, the Franklin Institute Science Museum is one of the oldest centers for science and education in the United States. Named after Benjamin Franklin, the museum houses many exhibits on science and discovery.
Fairmont Park
Comprising over 4,000 acres, Fairmont Park is a municipal park system in Philadelphia. The park is divided into east and west and features the Philadelphia Zoo, public art sculptures, as well as the steps made famous in the movie Rocky that lead to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
